Warm Weather Tips for Your Dog or Cat

Summer provides some unique challenges for pet owners. While summer presents many opportunities for owner and pet to enjoy the outdoors, it can be helpful to view summer conditions from a pet’s perspective. A major consideration is the heat. For your pet, overheating can be very dangerous, however, it can almost always be prevented.
  • Keep water bowls full and accessible
  • Provide a cool shady spot for pets to rest
  • Never leave a pet alone in a car. NEVER!
  • Provide exercise either in the morning or late afternoon (or other appropriate times) when it is cooler
  • Don't walk a dog on a hot sidewalk, it could harm his paws
  • Keep insects off and away from your pet, check for flies and ticks frequently
  • Don't cool a pet down with ice water, it can cause shock
  • Be aware that pets can get sunburned, particularly light skin/fur or thin furred pets
  • If possible provide a sprinkler or kiddy pool for dogs to cool off in
  • Make sure pets have a well ventilated cool spot to rest whether inside or out
Keeping your pet clean and well groomed often helps reduce the problems of hot weather.                                                        (Adapted from doctordog.com)

Several people have approached members of the Board with possible cases of neglect or abuse of animals. These situations fall under the jurisdiction of local police departments if in an incorporated area, they have an animal control officer, or the county sheriff if outside city limits. The Humane Society has no authority or jurisdiction in this type of situation. The closest SPCA is in St. Louis and it is doubtful they could make a timely intervention from there, so speak with the animal control officer - thats their job and they will evaluate and take necessary steps to correct the problem.
